How to Install a Monitor

A new monitor changes the feel of your entire workspace, but before you can get down to business, you need to connect, and install it to your existing computer. Follow these steps to get your new monitor up and running in no time.

  1. First: Determine where to position the monitor

Find a position on your desk or workspace where your new monitor fits well. Before you finish setting up the monitor, sit down and check that the display is at a comfortable height for long hours of use. The monitor cable and power cable have to reach your computer tower and power strip or outlet respectively.

  2. Second: Set the new monitor in place, and connect it to the computer

Place the monitor on your desk, using a stand if necessary to bring it to a comfortable height. Plug the power cord into the back of the monitor and into a power outlet. Connect the monitor to the computer. Most new monitors connect with an HDMI cable, while older monitors use a VGA cable. Consult the information supplied with your monitor to determine the most appropriate connector.

  3. Third: Install any software required, and configure the monitor

If a software disc was supplied with your monitor, insert it into your computer, and follow the instructions to install the monitor support software. Experiment with your video settings to find the settings that fit best with your usage. Choose the highest supported resolution you can use comfortably. If the text is too small to read, opt for a lower resolution. If black bars appear along the sides of the screen, choose a different resolution.

  4. Fourth: Restart your computer

In most cases, you need to restart your computer after installing monitor software, and connecting a new monitor.
